Summary

Brett has spent her career in foreign policy — shaping strategy, advising governments, moving pieces on a board whose outcomes she may never live to fully see. It's meaningful work. It just never feels finished. So she's started thinking about a different kind of problem: the kind with a beginning, a middle, and an answer. Oh, also, and these mysteries keep presenting themselves in her workplace, and Brett loves mysteries! On this episode of How To!, Mike brings on Christian, a private investigator to talk through the realities of being a PI. He walks Brett through the subtle art of "elicitation," the unglamorous realities of tailing cars and tracing skips, and why cracking a case in the real world is less about lurking in shadows and more about being the kind of person people want to talk to.

But something is happening here. What's this guy's deal? And frankly, I'm far more into that mystery than I am into this flute player.

Hello and welcome to how to. I'm Mike Peskin. Our culture is there a more mysterious and glamorous role than that of the gum shoe, the PI, the private dick, the private investigator?

Whole genres are built around this figure.

0:23.8

They are generally lone wolves. They court danger. They embody our belief that the rot is deep

0:30.1

and only the correct gray night can expose it. Not white knight. Part of being a private investigator

0:37.0

is a wariness, a standing apart from

0:39.2

society's ills while playing a small part to protect those harm by the system. Well, today, I have

0:46.8

someone who wants to be that, shall we not say private dick, but perhaps the gumbiness on her

shoe reflects a yearning or an itching.

Hi, I'm Brett Rosenberg. I'm a foreign policy expert and an advisor who is currently choosing to squander all of her political capital by going on this podcast.

1:05.3

How far back does this go, this yearning, this desire? To set things right.

1:11.5

To set things right, yeah.

1:12.6

I have a strong sense of justice, of wanting to get to the bottom of the evils of the world.

1:19.3

I read Encyclopedia Brown as a kid, Nancy Drew, Harriet the Spy, Hardy Boys.

1:26.2

Fast forward to Sherlock Holmes. Syke, psych, Sean the psychic spy is really my

true hero. So hopefully we can get to the bottom of how to develop those skills today. But I'm really

1:36.7

glad I've finally found a space to learn how to set the world to rights. Yeah, this is the way to do it.

1:42.0

Now, I'm just going to glean from hearing about your background

1:46.1

that you went to set the world right on sort of the macro level by being a foreign policy

1:52.2

expert, but this is pursuing your desire to do it one victimized, possibly sympathetic person

1:59.1

at a time. Yeah, I mean, thankfully, I've solved every foreign policy

issue. Very good. Yes. I've looked around the world and I'm like, oh, who was that?
