Summary

In this fiery episode, I'm joined by speaking coach, speaker, and (accidental) TV show host Jam Gamble. We discuss:

  • Jam's journey to becoming a speaker and how she accidentally got her own TV show
  • How to stop eating humble pie
  • How to 'step into character' (and what that means)
  • How to 'shift characters', depending on your audience
  • Owning your voice to #SlayTheMic

0:18.6

So let's get started with today's big conversation.

0:25.5

Hi everyone and welcome back to big conversations. I'm so excited to be here with

0:30.0

Jam Gamble, otherwise known as Slayer of the mic and the founder of the Slate Mike program.

0:35.7

And we're going to be talking all about as you may

0:37.5

have guessed by now I'll just lay the mic so thanks for coming on jam thank you for having me

0:42.8

so I'd love to just get a brief background on you as a speaker did you always know that you

0:49.8

wanted to be a speaker or were you something like me where you were terrified to death to raise your

0:53.7

hand in class and then one day became a speaker? Yeah, no, I was that kid who got into a lot of trouble for talking. I talked a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot. I saw a teacher of mine like last year and she remembered like 15 years later. She said, yeah, you talked a lot. I was like, I know, but look at me now. So I was that kid who talked a lot. I was that kid who raised my hand to contribute and to read out loud. But unfortunately, my teachers thought was a problem, which then my mom thought it was a problem because my teachers were complaining about it. So I didn't even know what public speaking was. I didn't know that people could be professional speakers. I didn't know any of that stuff. So it wasn't in my game plan. It all just happened really

1:30.2

accidentally. So what was your initial game plan? Oh, so I was that kid, like I think when I was

1:36.8

younger, I showed signs of being an entrepreneur. So the first thing I had was one of those V-tech

1:42.3

computers, whereas a toy computer, so I was

1:45.0

pretending to be a businesswoman. And then when I made breakfast for my family, I would like make a little menu with prices attached to it. But like, oh, that's so cute. I'm like, no, seriously, no, like it's, it's five bucks for this grandbook. Like, let's get a poppin over here. So those are little signs but I think in the beginning I want to be an actress again that

1:43.3

extroverted spirit. And then when I got into high school, because TLC back in the day used to be a channel you could actually learn from, not what they're putting out right now. Every year I changed what my career goal was going to be based on what TLC put up. I wonder if TLC knows that. No, they don't,

2:19.5

because clearly they're just doing something really ridiculous now. Okay, so entrepreneur,

2:24.0

actress, all in those lines. And then when was, did you ever give a talk in like middle school

2:29.1

or high school or college? That was your first time really on stage where you had to put

2:32.6

something together. My first time being a speaker, really, I would say was grade five when i was in the announcement club um that was
