Summary

Do you want to increase your kids' chances of marital success? If so, this is the episode for you! Ana Samuel, a research scholar at the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton, NJ, joins Suzanne to discuss the unfortunate 2023 Pew finding that most parents today "do not consider it important” whether or not their kids marry and have children.

Hey everyone. So it's really nice to be back, although I don't know that you could call this

0:07.5

really back. I stopped the podcast, as you know, earlier this year, and I had no plans to come back,

0:14.3

but I am going to periodically make an appearance.

0:24.7

And hopefully if you are subscribed to the show,

0:34.0

you will get that notification on your phone because I'm not going to have any exact weekly schedule for this. It's just sort of whenever I get to be in my bonnet or when something comes up that I want to address. I'm going to jump on here and talk to you about it. So that's what I'm

0:43.3

doing today. I am super excited to be able to talk to you about how to raise children who prioritize

0:49.7

marriage and who create lives that put family first. This topic is particularly pertinent since the latest

0:57.0

research from Pew has, shockingly, in my opinion, shown that, quote, most parents do not

1:02.4

consider important whether or not their kids get married and have kids. I don't know if that's

1:08.1

shocking to you, but it is to me. Whereas a great majority of parents, 88% to be exact,

1:12.7

I think it is very important for their kids to be financially independent

1:16.6

and have jobs or careers they enjoy.

1:20.8

That's a direct quote from Pew.

1:24.4

And it's put in order of important.

1:28.2

So it's not about whether or not to have a job or career or get married.

1:31.5

It's just that the top priority is clearly financial independence.

1:37.9

And at the bottom of the list, if you see the chart, if you go to Pew and I'm going to have all this in the show notes,

1:42.5

you will see that getting married and have kids is at the bottom of the ladder, which is the part that I find really surprising.

1:51.0

So here with me to talk about this subject today is Anna Samuel, who's a research scholar at

1:56.7

the Weatherstone Institute in Princeton, and she wrote an article about this Pew finding,

2:00.7

and as someone I actually used to work with once upon a time. So I'm thrilled to have

2:04.6

her here with me to chat about this very important subject. Welcome to the show, Anna.
