On September 4th, 2020, a mass school shooting took place within our country,

tragically taking the lives of four innocent individuals, two teachers and two students.

In the wake of that school shooting at Appalachie High School in Barrow County, Georgia,

it was revealed that the suspected gunman, 14-year-old Colt Gray,

had been flagged to the FBI last year for posting similar threats online.

In the devastating aftermath, one question continuously arises,

how can we prevent these shootings before they take place?

John Yu is a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

Today, he joins me with a look at the constitutional questions surrounding early intervention

to stop these tragedies before they occur.

Professor, in the current climate of these tragic mass shootings, especially mass school shootings,

there are many questions out there about

the interplay between our constitutional rights and the role that government can play and helping

to prevent these. And what I'm talking about specifically is the see something say something.

There have been many tragic incidences where we learn that the shooter was known to law enforcement.

And we've heard at times there was nothing more we could do or we had exhausted the level,

the reach that the sheriff's department or the FBI or the light could do.
