Well, when I was a freshman in high school, I decided I wanted to join the track and field team.

And I remember before the season started, our head coach took us into the main gym, and he took us to a place called the Hall of Champions.

And I grew up in West Texas, so our coach had this deep, rough voice. And as you can guess it in the

hall of champions, there were posters on the wall behind him of all these men and women who had

either individually or as a team won a state championship and track and field. And with me

sitting down with my friends, gazing up at him and at these legends behind

him, he began to go into a speech that sounded something like this. He said, do you know where we are?

And it was a rhetorical question. He said, we're in the hall of champions. Do you know who these

men and women are? They're champions. Do you know what else they are?

They're Mustangs. And then he looked at us and he said, do you know who you are? You're a Mustang.

Do you know what that means you are?

You are a champion.

And he began to perform this weird Jedi mind trick on all of us that just stirred this excitement about running track, the most boring sport in all of existence.

All of us were like pawing at the ground like, I'm a Mustang, let's go.

Like he just did this weird thing to us that tapped into this deep desire inside of us

to be a part of something, to be a part of something great, to not just run track,

but to be a part of the greatness that was Mustang, track, and field.

And I remember he closed his speech with these words,

work, train, bleed, so that one day you might be a legend spoken in the hushed whispers of fear

and awe. And it concerns me that I still remember what he said to me. And I share that
