Summary
Deep beneath the Earth sits 50,000 times more energy than all the world's fossil fuel reserves, but accessing it requires using the same controversial technology that oil companies spent trillions to develop: fracking. Cindy Taff left Shell to prove that drilling for geothermal heat instead of hydrocarbons can deliver what solar, wind and fossil fuels can't — clean, renewable power at all times, regardless of weather. Could this be the breakthrough that finally solves our energy challenges?

| 0:15.9 | Everywhere in the world, deep underneath our feet, is an enormous and powerful source of heat. |
| 0:21.6 | The potential of geothermal energy is something we hear about a lot in the conversation around |
| 0:26.3 | sustainable energy alternatives. You've probably heard about it on this very show. |
| 0:30.9 | In this talk, geothermal trailblazer Cindy Taft shares how she's redeploying oil and gas |
| 0:36.5 | drilling tools to tap the energy |
| 0:38.5 | stored in the deep, hot, dry rock that exists everywhere. |
| 0:47.7 | Okay, so if you can't tell already, I'm from Texas. |
| 0:55.7 | And I also spent my career in the oil and gas industry. |
| 0:59.8 | So do you hate me yet? |
| 1:02.9 | Let's hope not. |
| 1:04.9 | So I went into oil and gas because energy is life. |
| 1:09.2 | And I wanted to be able to provide people with lights, air conditioning, |
| 1:14.4 | heat, and of course, the ability to watch funny cat videos on their phone. |
| 1:20.8 | But energy also evolves. So humans used to burn wood for heat and light. We then transition to whale oil into coal and then to oil and gas. |
| 1:33.0 | But we're now using renewables like solar and wind. |
| 1:38.4 | And it's this exciting evolution to clean renewable energy |
| 1:43.0 | that inspired me to leave shell and start my own geothermal |
| 1:49.3 | company with my partners. And so we're now using that mud on your boots know-how from the oil and |
| 1:55.2 | gas industry to drill for heat instead of for hydrocarbons. So most people don't know this, but there's a lot of heat |
| 2:03.2 | deep in the earth, and the deeper you drill, the hotter it gets. And it's this heat, this energy. |
