Sunday, December the first, 50 days until Donald Trump's inauguration, and the president-elect

has sent his clearest signal yet that he aims to upend the country's federal law enforcement

agencies and the rule of law itself. Last night,

Trump announced on Truth Social that he intends to replace the current FBI director, Christopher

Ray, with one of Trump's own staunchest allies. This man, Cash Patel, a firebrand figure

and a favorite among Trump's most hardcore supporters.

Replacing the FBI director,

who's limited to serving a single 10-year term,

is an unusual move in itself,

but it's something that you know Trump has done before.

Early in his presidency, Trump fired this man,

the FBI director, James Comey,

who was leading an investigation at the time regarding

possible ties between Trump's campaign, some of his aides, and Russia. Ray was then appointed

to succeed Comey as FBI director, and now it appears that Ray also won't be able to serve out

his full year, 10-year term, an outcome that he's been preparing

for since Trump won the election last month, according to reporting by NBC News.

Now, this is just the latest episode that demonstrates how distrustful, paranoid, and frustrated

Trump has been of the law enforcement arm of the federal government ever since

he first entered office.
