how to make a living at it, and how to make an impact in the world with your art. I'm Jake Parker.

And today we are doing a special best of episode, all about portfolios.

The reason being is Lee is in Spain and I am in New York.

And so we didn't have enough people to do a three point perspective.

So we figured we'd air one of these special episodes where we've cobbled together all

the different things we've talked about

in portfolios over several episodes. And so I want you to sit back and just listen to what we

talk about today. I don't know where I'm going with this. But here's some of the key takeaways

of what we're going to talk about. First thing, art directors need

illustrators. When you come at it from that angle and think an art director can't do the art

themselves. Publisher can't publish things without an artist. They need an illustrator. So what are you

doing to make them look good and to be easy to work with?

If you could do those things, they're going to turn back to you again and again.

We also talk about how if you put your best effort into everything you create, each new

project can be a valuable portfolio piece.

So when you create consistently maintaining an updated portfolio becomes really easy.

Right. So every time you're working on a thing, just think, how could this be a portfolio

piece? And regardless of it turns out to be good or not, if you go into it with that mindset,

you're going to always be able to update and refresh that

portfolio.

It's going to look good.
