Summary
This year, everyone's become aware of the hollowing out of U.S. semiconductor manufacturing capacity. Whether it's the rise of TSMC, the stumbles at Intel, or the inability of car companies to acquire much-needed chips, semiconductors are becoming a major political issue. But how can you actually turn things around? What would the right policy mix look like? On this episode, we speak with Alex Williams, a research analyst at Employ America, and Hassan Khan, a tech procurement expert with a PhD in semiconductor policy, to discuss how the new administration can make American chip manufacturing roar back to life.

| 1:14.4 | But I think there's actually two reasons. Maybe three, or maybe a bunch, why we keep going |
| 1:20.4 | back to this well. I mean, for one, there's just a lot of news. So many things have happened, |
| 1:26.0 | whether it's sort of new ventures from, say, Intel or new spending plans from talent semi or new |
| 1:31.7 | legislation being proposed. So there's all kinds of new news. But I also think it's just a really good, |

| 1:45.6 | competition and also government policy. And we've spoken a lot about this, but government policy |
| 1:53.2 | plays such a big role in sort of incubating semi-conductor industry. And I think we spoke |
| 2:00.2 | about this probably the most with Taiwan and TSMC. But even in the US, you have that history of |
| 2:06.7 | government support nurturing the early stages of the semi-conductor industry as well. |
| 2:12.5 | Yeah, that's exactly right. Like it touches on all these things, technology, |
| 2:16.4 | competition, markets, stock market. But as you say, there is a long history in China, |
| 2:24.0 | now currently Taiwan, Japan, the US, of governments playing a role. And I think there's |
| 2:29.3 | like this sort of broader macro thing, which we talk about all the time of sort of more activist |
| 2:35.2 | role for government for democratically elected, elected leaders, like taking a more active role |
