Summary

The world is in flux. What's Europe's place in it, exactly? This week, we're bringing you something different: a big, sprawling conversation with leading European historian Timothy Garton Ash. Can anything good come from Trumpism for this continent? What can be done to stop autocrats like Viktor Orbán from undermining the EU from the inside? And does it matter if we talk about different things when we talk about Europe?    Timothy is Professor of European Studies at the University of Oxford. 'Homelands' is now available in more than 20 languages; you can find all the available editions here.   We'll be at two events in Amsterdam for Europe Day on May 9! We've got two pairs of tickets to give away to the late-night EuropaNacht event at Paradiso. Email [email protected] for a chance to win them. If you're too late, you can buy a ticket here; tickets to the earlier event, at SPUI25, are available here. With many thanks to our friends at the European Cultural Foundation, DutchCulture and De Kiesmannen.   Thanks for listening. This is Katie in Paris. Hello, Dominic in Amsterdam.

0:59.0

Hi, Katie. You might be able to hear a little laugh in Katie's voice. That's because she just

1:03.2

tried to say hello about four times, but she had a little like a gargle bubble in her voice.

1:08.1

Don't tell everyone that. Sorry. We've been doing this for a while now. You'd think

1:12.7

I'd be more professional. But anyway, we're here. How are you, Dominic? Yeah, I'm fine. You remember

1:18.9

last week I was talking about P-FAS, this Forever Chemicals in eggs in the Netherlands. Well, just after

1:26.2

last week's episode went out, there was more terrible

1:29.4

forever chemical news, which is that it's in our European wine as well.

1:34.5

No!

1:35.3

They found alarmingly high levels of a little known forever chemical, TFA, in European wines,

1:41.7

and it seems like the level of these chemicals in our wine has exploded in recent decades,

1:47.5

and it seems to be connected to pesticide use. So, oh, they're coming for our wine too, as well as our eggs.

1:54.2

Well, that's a nice cheerful note to start this podcast on. Thanks for that.

1:57.8

How are you? I'm good. Can I undo your miserable news by telling you about something really nice I saw on the Paris Metro this week?

2:06.3

Please.

2:07.2

So I don't really tend to think of the Metro somewhere where I generally witness delightful things.

2:11.5

It's normally, you know, someone urinating or getting out a knife, that kind of thing.

2:16.8

This week, this guy got on and he was wearing his headphones

2:20.5

and clearly listening to a song that he really, really liked.

2:24.5

He was just kind of bopping along.
