Summary

If you want to learn faster you have to experiment with different 'modes' of reading and learning. One of my favorites is the 'gulping' approach, where you bounce around between 4 or 5 books all in one sitting. This takes advantage of what Steven Johnson in his book, "Where Good Ideas Come From," calls "negative quarter-power scaling." This means reading twice the books doesn't just give you twice the knowledge - it's exponential - it gives you 3 or 4 times the mental growth...Learn more about your ad choices. Are you a fast learner or are you slow? This question is of the utmost importance

for your life. So here you can see I just laid out all these books if you saw

0:11.4

that other video. I spent 700 bucks or something on books. I don't always buy

0:16.0

them new but I was at Barnes & Noble and I thought what the heck? I do that

0:20.4

every once in a while going a big binge so I think there's four. There's about

0:24.9

roughly 30 books there, 20, 30 books and on all varying subjects. And what's

0:34.5

relevant for your life is a little experiment I've been running and I

0:39.6

with fascinating results. So basically most of us have been taught that we

0:46.7

have to throttle our learning. Okay that's what I call it. This is the opposite.

0:50.4

You're either a gulper or a throttler. I did a talk on this. It's just an

0:55.0

audio I think I have on my YouTube but here's a somewhat of a video version.

0:59.1

Oh it's a little bit different what I'm gonna talk about but so you have

1:02.4

gulpers and throttlers. So when it comes to knowledge the reason I believe or

1:09.0

one of the reasons that most of us have become throttlers meaning we when we drink

1:14.9

water instead of drinking it real quickly you know like beer people some

1:18.6

people can chug it they can gulp it real fast they've trained themselves because

1:22.8

you have a natural reflux reflex that keeps you from wanting to drink too fast

1:27.8

because you can drown in your own fluids right if it goes down the wrong

1:32.6

pipe and goes into your lungs so there is good common sense to drinking slower

1:37.8

but but but there is an ability through training where you can actually get to

1:44.6

the point where you can drink much more quickly than the average person. Now

1:48.3

when it comes to knowledge I think there is somewhat of a danger of learning too
