Summary
Matt sits down with world-renowned therapist Marisa Peer to dismantle the self-sabotaging loops that keep us stuck. If you’ve ever felt like your brain is working against your recovery, this conversation provides the ultimate manual for reclaiming control.
We explore the "Ladder of Looping Thoughts" and the powerful truth that you weren’t born broken, you learned it. Marisa explains the link between creativity and addiction, showing how high suggestibility can lead to deep-seated shame. Healing is framed as stripping away these learned layers to reactivate your original sense of self.
This discussion also provides practical tools like the AAA Method (Aware, Accept, Articulate) and simple language shifts to resolve internal conflict.
This episode covers the following themes: Language, Beliefs, Worth, Addiction, and Self-Awareness.

| 0:45.3 | Hi everybody, Matt Willis here, and this is the podcast where we look back at life's toughest moments to figure out how to move forward. |
| 0:52.0 | I spent years trying to kind of get control of my own mind, |
| 0:55.8 | right? Through even when I think about addiction, I was kind of trying to kind of correct something |
| 1:01.2 | or kind of trying to find something. And I'm still working on it now. Exploring this with me today |
| 1:06.9 | is world-renowned therapist, Marissa Pia. Marissa, thank you so much you're coming on. |
| 1:10.8 | Thank you for inviting me. I'm so excited to have you on. Me too. I've been very, very excited. I mean, lots of our audience are either people struggling with problems with addiction or with mental health and they're kind of suffering in or they're the loved one of someone who's suffering. So we kind of get loads of questions in and loads of messages. |
| 1:29.4 | One that kind of upsets me the most, I think, is one that they say they tried and it didn't |
| 1:34.9 | work or they can't change, but they can't change their head. |
| 1:40.3 | Do you hear that a lot? |
| 1:41.6 | Yeah, but, you know, trying is a misdirect. |
| 1:43.6 | The word trying implies failure. Never saying I'm going to try and read my iPad now. I'm going to try and speak into the mic. So to get your brain to work before, you have to really understand the language it uses. And it's that one because I'm trying to fall asleep. Well, here's the thing. Trying implies failure. Falling is the greatest fear. I'm trying to fall pregnant. That's so weird to the brain. You're not trying, not going to fall. And being pregnant doesn't mean you'll ever have a baby. But if you flip that to I'm making a baby today, the brain understands it. So you've got to learn language and what the brain understands and what it doesn't understand. If you say I'm going to try |
| 2:17.6 | and get that job, you've already said, I'm not going to get it. And so your brain isn't going to help you have a great memory and be really good at speaking and give a great presentation. If you say, I'm on it, I'm doing it, that job has got my name all over it. Your brain will help you. The minute you say try it goes |
