We're doing some solo episodes, much like we've done for many, many, many episodes

here on the Epic Gardening Podcast, so for the next couple weeks, it will be me, Kevin

Aspiratu.

We'll talk now about growing saffron.

This is one of the most expensive spices in the world.

Why is it that way?

Well, the reason why is because all your harvesting the saffron crocus for are three stigmas that

lie in the center.

Once it's dried, it loses 90% of its weight.

It is worth more than several times its own weight and gold.

So it's more valuable than gold on a per weight basis.

Pretty crazy, right?

Well, let's think about how to grow it, and of course, we're probably not going to grow

enough to create a meaningful amount of saffron, but it's still worthwhile to know.

220,000 flowers are needed to make a single kilogram of the dried spice.

That's just so crazy.

That means that if you wanted to become a saffron farmer, you'd need so many plants.

You just need so many of these plants, but let's talk about it then.
