What would the world be without peanuts? I know for me it would be a whole lot worse because I absolutely love them although some people are allergic so maybe the world would be dramatically better for those people.

Whether that's the case or not they still are fun to grow, but it is dramatically under-rept in

the garden.

Most people don't grow peanuts. Now I've tried it

multiple times. It's gone a lot better recently but my very first peanut crop was

absolutely terrible. I think there's still a

YouTube video up about me harvesting like five peanuts from one plant and it was

just a very pathetic affair I have to say but let's talk about it.

Let's figure out how to grow them.

As you can guess by its name, peanuts are part of the P family.

They are not nuts.

They're actually a legume.

They're much more closely related to soybeans than something like pecanes.

So they're a very interesting crop.

Let's talk about a couple different varieties that you may want to consider growing.

First of all you have the runner group. Most commercial growers grow this

because it has uniform seeds, it has a high yield, the plants are somewhat vine-like and they take up a lot more horizontal space.

Then you have the Spanish group. These have a high oil content and of course they're used for peanut oil they're used in candy and mixed

nuts and some of these go from seed to harvest in 90 days so they're a really good

choice if you're in a colder area now there's some other varieties in the Valencia group or the Virginia group but again
