When President Biden took office, he pledged to, as he put it, restore the soul of America.

Biden promised that his administration would emphasize civility in an effort to bring

the country together and to restore trust.

To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America requires

so much more than words requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy. Unity. Unity.

But the reality Biden faces is that he's governing a nation with citizens who are susceptible

to misinformation and still six weeks in question the legitimacy of his presidency.

The level of dishonesty is not to be believed.

We have a very sick and corrupt electoral process that must be fixed immediately.

This election was rigged and the Supreme Court and other courts didn't want to do anything

about it.

False claims of election fraud are just one way, our democracy, our institutions, our

civics have been tested over the past year.

We've seen violence and civil unrest and attack on the U.S. Capitol, death threats against

public health officials and a general feeling of bitterness and anger toward our politics.

Even the day we're recording this Thursday, the Capitol police were on alert because of

a threat of another potential attack on the Capitol, though this time the threat didn't

materialize.

All of that together though has left trust in our institutions significantly diminished.

Last year, Pew Research Center marked a trust in our government at a historic low.

This trend has led to questions about the durability of American democracy.

Biden has said he hopes to tackle that challenge.
