Summary

'Awe Is The Emotion Of Self-Transcendence' - Jonathan Haidt

Dacher Keltner has spent over 20 years studying happiness, and he thinks the secret to a good life is 'finding awe'. Awe is a state when we feel deeply connected to something bigger than ourselves, and in the process our sense of self (the idea we have about who we are) disappears, or at the very least shrinks dramatically.

One of the best ways to experience awe is in nature, which Dacher and I discuss in this episode.

My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself draws on some of my favourite interviews over the last six years. In it, I seek to challenge our ideas about 'success', and where peace, joy and fulfilment are truly to be found.

Nature is almost the most obvious one, I think, in terms of finding oil, whether it be seeing the millions of stars on a really clear night, not that you ever do in this country, but many of us will have had that experience.

1:02.3

But even just being near parks and that kind of thing, now we've got a park really near us.

1:06.6

It's my wife and I's spiritual home.

And you, you know, if you ask people what brings you awe,

1:31.8

a lot of people will mention the big sources of nature, right? Oh, the redwood trees in California,

the Grand Canyon, the, you know, the, the incredible lakes of the Lake District, or what have you. But what, but the,

the more interesting truth to where we find awe in nature is a couplefold. And one is it's,

it's in every form of nature. It is in gardening. You know, they're great gardening to
