Summary

Everyone wants a mentor, the wise little green creature who will teach us how to swing a lightsaber and use the Force.

I was no exception when I started out in photography. I thought someone was going to take my outstretched hand and guide me along the path to greatness. They’d tell me what to learn, how to learn it, and what to do once I’d done so.

As I’ve progressed along my creative path and become a person whom other aspiring photographers ask to serve as their own mentor, I’ve come to realize that mentorship as we think of it is a pernicious fairy tale.

In this episode, a few things I've learned about about finding a mentor.

Enjoy!

Hey there and welcome to another episode of the show. Today's a micro show and I wanted to start off with asking you a question. That question is simple. Do you have a mentor that you can turn to for counsel, for support, for ideas as a backboard to help you respond to the thoughts that

0:22.8

you're having, someone who's just a little bit further along in their journey than you are with

0:29.5

yours. The reality is that the community you build around your work, friends, co-conspirators,

0:36.9

collaborators, mentors, it's all a big part of your success

0:42.7

and or struggles that you might have. Ultimately, mentorship and people who are just a little

0:49.5

bit further along in their journey than you are in yours come to play a critical role. This reminds me of

0:59.8

my own experience seeking mentors to help me with my journey. I was largely alone and had very

1:08.2

few mentors in my photography career, but as I transitioned into building

1:13.7

things other than my photography business, things like Creative Live, for example, as I endeavored

1:19.5

deeper into my entrepreneurial journey, I started to recognize that I was out of source, that I

1:26.6

hadn't built businesses at scale and that having people in my corner that I was out of source, that I hadn't built businesses at scale, and that having

1:29.9

people in my corner that I could speak to who had built significant businesses would become ever

1:37.3

more important. And this takes me back to a story early on in Creative Lives journey. Now, for those of you who aren't familiar with Creative

1:46.3

Live or weren't familiar with it, you know, some 12 years ago now, in short, we'd started

1:52.2

providing live workshops that anyone in the world could watch for free. The business model

1:58.4

was simple. You could watch for free and only if you wanted to watch

2:02.2

the recording over and over and over again in the future. Only then did you have to purchase the

2:07.8

workshop. It was a cool, simple business model. And after doing a few of these, we started to see

2:13.5

massive potential. And we knew this because we had had hundreds of thousands of viewers and

2:21.5

were making hundreds of thousands of dollars with each of these broadcasts. What was I think our

2:28.3

fifth or sixth creative live workshop. We were tired and excited by what it just happened. And I remember taking the

2:36.2

crew out for pizza. Again, we were thrilled. We were high-fiving and exhausted from working,
