Summary

For some reason, entrepreneurs seem to forget that mentorship is also a relationship like any other: you have to add value to it, or else you’re just another askhole.

Tune in for a 3 step on how where you need to be and what you need to do to find and keep a good mentor.

Key Takeaways

[:24] “Hey Ryan! will you mentor me?” No.

[1:42] The one-on-one mentor/mentee relationship is very important — and just like any relationship — you have to make deposits in order to withdraw.

Here is what you need to do to find a mentor:

Right place [2:28] put yourself in a position to identify and meet the type of person you want to enter into a mentoring relationship with. Join communities, pay for masterminds, events and conferences!

Right person [3:50] identify the person who has built or done what you want to do, regardless of the area, marriage, business, fitness.

Right price [4:55] find the give! Find out what they want, what they don’t have and give it to them.

[5:54] Human beings have a limited capacity for people who they can pay attention to. If you want a mentor to pay attention to you, you have to offer them value, and offer it to them strategically.

This is one of the most commonly asked questions that I'm asked outside of,

0:33.8

hey, will you mentor me?

0:37.4

I love getting that question because I respond with no. I'll explain why. I don't mean to

come across as overly douchey with that response. But what we're going to talk about in this video

0:46.2

is something that I call the relationship bank account. And the relationship bank account is

0:52.6

you have two people. And the reason why you're in a relationship

0:58.4

with another person is because they bring some value to your life in in some way and the more

that you bring each other value in that relationship, the more you can make withdrawals

1:12.6

from that bank account.

1:13.6

The more you deposit into the bank account, the more you can withdraw.

1:16.6

We've all dealt with the relationship with the person that we might call an ask hole, the

1:22.6

person who just wants and takes and extracts as much as possible.

1:26.6

No one likes them. But for some reason,

I think entrepreneurs have this blind spot about finding mentors and they forget that just like

1:33.8

all relationships, mentors need to have deposits made into their relationship bank account.

1:39.6

And that's what we're going to talk about in this video.

This is so vastly important because who you
