Summary

Episode 36: Alex Lieberman (@businessbarista) brings you a special Wednesday edition of Founder’s Journal to share lessons from Bill Perkins’ Die With Zero. It’s a playbook on how to live life by maximizing enjoyment vs. maximizing wealth. Entrepreneurs can get caught up with racking up as many dollars as they possibly can but miss out on investing in experiential moments that can pay dividends over time. Here are the biggest lessons: Life is not a game of space invaders Experiences are investments like stock There’s a huge cost to having money left over The human brain is irrational about death You should save less, especially when you’re young Die with zero doesn’t mean you don’t care about kids or charity The optimal time to extract enjoyment is ages 26-35 Health is the #1 factor affecting lifetime fulfillment You should find more and more ways to exchange $ for free time There’s 2 common regrets people have on their deathbed Use time buckets #TheCrazyOnes #Startups #Entrepreneur Listen to The Crazy Ones here: https://link.chtbl.com/OV4W93_W Watch The Crazy Ones here: https://www.youtube.com/@TheCrazyOnesPod Subscribe to Morning Brew! What's up, everyone? Welcome back to another episode of The Crazy Ones. I am back with another

0:06.3

journal style episode where I talked through something going on in my world of running businesses,

0:12.9

investing in businesses, talking to entrepreneurs. This episode is going to be a little bit different

0:17.2

though. I am in this group chat with a bunch of founders who sold their companies and we have

0:24.0

all sorts of discussions in there from things we're looking to invest in. What people are doing

0:28.9

with their money to new business ideas. But in this group, there's a book that's been

0:36.8

recommended over and over and over for people to read. Someone in the group got the author of

0:42.6

the book to come speak to the group this week. So in advance of that, I decided I want to read it.

0:47.6

The book is called Die With Zero. The subtitle is Getting All You Can From Your Money And Your Life

0:54.0

and it's by this guy Bill Perkins. And Bill Perkins, the description of him is,

0:59.3

Bill Perkins is one of the most successful energy traders in history. He's also a hedge fund manager,

1:04.8

Hollywood film producer, high stakes tournament poker player, and the resident Indiana Jones for

1:10.9

several charities. Perkins regularly travels the world with close friends and family.

1:15.9

Sky is crazy range in terms of the stuff that he does. I read this book because I heard it was

1:21.9

really good. I wanted to kind of understand everything about it before the author came to

1:27.6

speak to the group. But also the topic of the book and my understanding, the topic is something

1:32.0

that very much resonates with things that I think about a lot in life. The whole gist of the book

1:37.6

is Bill Perkins makes this argument for why people should die with zero dollars left in the bank.

1:42.8

And basically the whole book is providing context on why he believes that's the case and

1:48.3

nuance beyond just this very catchy title. And for me, one of the reasons I was so interested in

1:55.2

reading it is that one of my biggest fears is the fear of running out of money.

2:02.8

And when I think about why is it that I have some level of money insecurity? And I think also
