As we face another year of resolutions to get in better shape, it's time to face the music for 2017 on this episode of Live Happy Now.

The ancient Greeks defined happiness as the joy you feel moving towards your potential.

0:15.6

To think about positive psychology, it's a science, and it's actually younger than the internet, believe it or not.

0:23.5

The reality is that social connection is in the research, the greatest predictor we have of long-term

0:30.1

happiness. You have some factors in your control. They can promote the health and resilience

0:36.1

and growth of your absolutely most important

0:38.1

asset, which is your brain. And so it all comes down to understanding ourselves. There's a way for all

0:44.0

of us to succeed, but it might take different things. We're all looking for the same thing, and that's a way

0:49.2

to bring a little bit more joy to our day. Join us as we look at the many different paths that lead us to

that happy

place. This is Live Happy Now. Well, Paula, it's great to have you on the program again. We've been

1:01.5

doing a lot of these here lately, and it's nice. It's a chance for us to talk and catch up.

1:06.1

How you been? I'm fantastic, Day, R. How about yourself? Oh, just lovely. Getting ready for all those New Year's resolutions that we all plan to uphold, and then sometimes we break really, really quickly.

1:19.3

And our goal today is to help you not break that resolution as quickly, because we're talking about music again, but we're talking about exercise this time.

1:28.5

And we sort of talked about that. I think the first time we did this, how, you know, when you're,

1:32.9

when you're going to do something physical, having music can really motivate you. And if you put

1:40.4

the playlist together right, it can really motivate you. How else does having a playlist

1:44.8

to help with exercise? Well, you know, music in itself is a powerful mood booster. So it might

1:51.4

help you even just get off the couch and decide, yes, I'm actually going to go for a run or

1:57.0

go lift weights. You know, momentum can sometimes not be there after we've done something for a while. You've, you know, you've started a new workout routine, and after a few weeks it's like, ugh, I don't want to go do that tonight. Music can, you know, just listening to it even before you set out, it can be that reminder of like, okay, come on, we got this, let's go do this. Sure. And so that's one way. And it'll really change your energy level. And then when you add in the component of the lyrics, and if it's really encouraging and empowering, you know, you can use that to sort of help you cheer on through your workout. As you mentioned it, like listening to it before you go out there, there's all those athletes you see, like when they're showing up for their event, right? They show them getting out of the bus and they have the headphones on and they're listening and all this. I wonder if sports psychologists, like within their teams, the ones that work for teams, I wonder if they shouldn't have a hand in like the in arena warm-up music up music. Would that, would that maybe help? Would that

2:51.0

pump up some teams? Oh, I think that'd be awesome. And, you know, we, we all saw the Michael Phelps face. Yes. And, and he talked about, he actually played, talked about the song that he listened to and he has a particular song that he listens to before he's going to swim. And it's that same mentality.

3:07.2

And, you know, maybe that's what we should all do.
