A partner and I had built a television subscriber network during the mid and late 1990s,

and we did hundreds of these black tie red carpet showcase events

and training symposiums to launch every major marketplace across the United States and all over Canada.

When my partner was speaking on stage, I always sat in the front row to show support and

offer her encouragement. That was until she forbade me to do so. I asked her why.

She said, it's your face. What the hell? I asked. She said, yeah, I can't sting seeing that

tortured look on your face. It rattles my nerves. Tortured look, I retorted. What are you talking

about? She said, you should really see it you

really need to fix your face yeah she said fix your face long before wild yela and lil pulk did it on a rap

song but I was still confounded what the heck was wrong with my face so I went looking through video

footage that we had of one of our training symposiums.

While she was on stage, I was in the front row and you could see my eyebrows furrow and

my eyes narrow as she was talking.

Apparently I do that when I'm listening intensely and processing thoughts.

While I was sitting there listening, the look on my face suggests that I was

being critical and disapproving. Even though I wasn't, I was just listening and processing.

You see, our faces communicate volumes. Whether you are aware of it or not, when we are in the

presence of others, we are continually giving and receiving wordless

signals. All of our nonverbal behaviors, such as our posture, our gestures, eye contact,
