capitalism and extremely wealthy people have created this competition among working class and middle class

people trying to get us to spend more and more so that air quotes impress other people. And this is

something I talk about a lot in the book because that's nonsense. And the real path to financial freedom

is stepping out of this kind of consumerist rat race and being able to spend on what you love.

Maybe what you love is fairly luxurious.

Maybe you're like, I'm flying first class.

I'm staying in five star hotels.

And like, that's my jam.

Okay, that in and of itself is not a problem.

But it is a problem when you spend, when the only way you can get joy

is through spending. And so I like to advocate for people to have a no spend day and just try

and do things that don't require you to spend money. And we have to reclaim our money from

the literally multi-billion dollar marketing campaigns that companies are putting

out year after year after year. And you can't just self-will your way out of that. You have to

understand the game and then come back to your own money and say, wait a second, wait a second,

where is marketing siphoning my money out? And where can I reclaim that?
