Do you ever feel like you're just going through the motions, waiting for someone to give you permission to chase your dreams? If so, this episode is for you. The secret to turning pro in any creative career is a thousand tiny imperfect actions. It is the difference between wondering what was possible to experiencing it.

In this episode we discuss the importance of acting like a pro before you are one, and how success in your chosen field hinges on your willingness to show up and do the work without approval, permission, or praise.

Some points we get into:

Unless you're new to the show, you would be aware that I am at my core, or maybe one of the reasons that you are familiar with my work is as a self-taught photographer.

0:26.4

And if you know anything about my backstory, you probably will be aware that I grew as a photographer in fits and starts. I've shared this open on the internet

0:31.5

and books that I've written and my blog and social feeds and whatnot. And those fits and starts,

0:37.0

they led to so many dead ends

0:40.2

and yet no one was telling me at those dead ends what it was that i needed to learn or to do

0:47.3

differently i was in most of this time i was just following my curiosity trying to take photos

0:53.8

because that's that's what I wanted

0:55.8

to do. And some successes in taking photos, those successes helped me solidify new techniques,

1:03.7

and the failures, and God knows there was a lot of them, those failures, they gave me

1:07.9

opportunities to figure out what I did wrong. So this show today, though,

1:15.1

isn't necessarily about me. It is the shared journey that we all have in trying to live the

1:23.1

life to pursue the career, the path that we want. And it turns out there's a lot of

1:30.2

similarities. So again, here's the thing. If you want to be the noun, to be any noun, what you

1:36.2

have to do is do the verb. You want to be a writer you must write. You want to be a entrepreneur.

1:41.5

You must build businesses. Now, I wanted to be a professional photographer and to do that

1:47.6

I had to take pictures but that misses the professional part right to be a professional photographer

1:53.9

I had to take photos and sell them. So this is where we get to a concept that I like to call act as if.

2:05.6

Act as if then fill in the blank, you've already made it, you've done it. Act as if you are a successful fill in the blank thing that you want to be.

2:10.6

And this is what characteristic or a process or a lens,

2:14.6

downtown double entendre there with my photography stuff, that I feel like is so

2:19.4

exciting and interesting once you truly grok it.
