It should have been just another autumn Sunday in Paris.

The city was still waking, the hordes of tourists just starting to trickle in

as galleries open their doors to show off their treasures.

But last Sunday was like no other.

Breaking now an international manhunt underway after masked thieves stole priceless jewels from the

most famous museum in the world. This is the stuff of Hollywood films, a seven-minute heist in broad daylight.

With just a couple of high-vis jackets and an audacious plan, three masked thieves managed to steal

the French crown jewels. Targeting the Louvre and stealing the crown jewels is the theft of the decade. So how did they do it?

They were good at what they did. And sometimes when you're that brazen, you're able to catch

everybody off guard. And that's exactly what happened. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

How did one of the most famous museums in the world become the scene of a national embarrassment?

And how did the masked gang pull off the crime of the decade? The story today, the Lube Heist.

I'm David Chazan, a Times correspondent based in Paris.

David, is there anything else that people are talking about in Paris other than this extraordinary heist?

They're talking a lot about it, but France is in political turmoil as well and the government's

desperately trying to get a budget passed by parliament we've seen several governments collapse

over the past few months the current one is holding on by the skin of its teeth. So in a way, I think a lot of French

people are just seeing this terrible heist at the Louvre, the theft of France's crown jewels. I mean,

for British people, it's comparable to somebody breaking into the Tower of London and making off with the Crown jewels. So it's embarrassing, they're furious, they feel humiliated and they're also wondering what is becoming of France if it can't protect a museum like the Louvre.
