It's the media buzz meter with Howard Kurtz. I am extremely upset about the assassination

attempt at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night for all sorts of reasons. It's a miracle that

nobody was killed. Things could have been much worse. The security was horrible. I'll get into that

in a minute. And, you know, I knew so many of the people there have been to a number of these

dinners, basically for the purpose of, you know, getting a chance to talk to

officials or you don't normally have access to. And in an instant, the 2000 journalists there

went from covering this thing, or actually sort of eating their salad salad course to being not only eyewitnesses

but potential victims of this crazed gunman and chief among them was my daughter judy kurtz

in the no columnist for the hill who like just about everybody else there dived under the table and because

she was sitting in the back of the room she along with many others were just a few feet from the

gunmen who'm not going to name um and everybody's life was in danger.

And Ovalo journalists, two things happened.

They were there, and so suddenly they had to cover the story.

And Judy wrote this, you know, terrific first-person piece in the middle of the night,

as did many others, but what it was like to be in that room after the sound of gunfire went off. But the fact that the gunman even got as far as he did

is a tribute to the horrible security there. That hotel has never been a secure place. And it reminds me of when Ronald Reagan was

shot outside the Washington Hilton in 1981. And I covered that. I was told to get in the car

and figure out, you know, where he had been taken. And I got in the car, didn't know, turned on the radio, turned out President Reagan had been
