Let's satisfy some curiosity. As summer arrives in the northern hemisphere, you might be wondering if the heat will have any effect on the spread of COVID-19.

0:30.0

We know some viruses, like the common cold and the seasonal flu, typically thrive in colder weather and die out when it gets warm.

0:37.5

But until recently, we didn't really know how the novel coronavirus would respond to the heat.

1:05.2

from mid-March to April. Then they analyzed the relationship between temperature,

1:10.0

humidity, sunlight, and new cases of COVID-19. Their findings show a tricky dual relationship between summer

1:17.6

weather and coronavirus transmission. On one hand, they found that high heat and humidity were associated with decreased viral

1:25.2

spread. For every percentage increase in heat and humidity, they saw a 3% decrease in new cases of COVID-19.

1:33.0

But while the virus might not like summer weather,

1:36.0

we humans love it.

1:38.0

And that's making it especially easy

1:40.0

for the virus to spread on sunny days. The researchers found coronavirus transmission was greater on days with more hours of sunshine,

1:48.0

possibly because people are more likely to go outside and mingle on a nice day.
