Let's talk about how your stress can affect your immune system.

0:27.6

Now, when we're talking about stress, we're talking about the hormone cortisol.

0:31.1

Cortisol based on Sibha collection of medical illustrations, volume four of the

0:38.6

underconsystem, under the section cortisol, Dr. Frank Netter talks about the

0:44.8

relationship to the immune system. Cortisol has a purpose of suppressing the

0:53.4

white blood cell. Your white blood cells are basically the army of your immune

0:57.8

system. So cortisol suppresses that function. It inhibits that function. And this

1:04.0

is why if you go to the doctor and you're sick, whether you have, I don't know,

1:09.1

allergies, some skin reaction, some autoimmune disease, they'll give you

1:14.9

prednisone, which is cortisol, it's synthetic version, and that will clear up

1:20.1

the skin reaction, the allergy, or even the poison ivy. And it will also get

1:26.1

rid of inflammation. So it's suppressing this over reactive immune system.

1:42.6

explain. There's two types of stress. There's acute stress, and then there's

1:46.6

chronic stress. And this is the one that really is behind so many health

1:52.7

problems, because when you chronically elevate cortisol through years of

1:58.4

stress, or months of stress, or even a sudden overwhelming shock of some

2:03.3

stress, you could create what's called cortisol resistance, okay? Very similar

2:09.0

to insulin resistance, in that this amount of cortisol that's coming out

2:14.0

through the body, may even look normal in your blood, but it's not effective.

2:19.9

It's the cells are not sensitive to cortisol anymore. They're not connecting.
