Hello and welcome to Coffee House Shots, the Spectator's Daily Politics Podcast.

I'm Cindy Yu and I'm joined by Katie Balls and James Forsy.

Since our episodes yesterday, while the world seems to have turned upside down. We don't normally do US politics

on this podcast, but last night's events were so shocking that I think we probably saw up with

that. James, what was your reaction? I think what happened last night was a catastrophe for

everybody in the free world because the people who will be happiest this morning with those awful scenes that happened

will be every strong man dictator in the world because the United States is to use

man-in-normates phrase the indispensable nation and you can have no great push for democratization,

human rights, respect for the rule of law, the international rules-based order,

without the United States. And what happened yesterday will be thrown back in America's face

whenever it raises questions about the free or fairness of an election anywhere else.

I also think it is something that should scare us all because I lived in the States for four years

and I would have never, would have never believed that you would see those scenes.

I think they are illustrative of something that we are,

every Western society is going to have to deal with,

which is the truly scary thing about the people who participated

in that mob attempt to pervert the electoral process was that I think many of them genuinely

believe the election two have been rigged because I think they purely imbibe information from

sources that tell them that the election has been rigged.

And I think what makes President Trump's

conduct so utterly deplorable is that he keeps feeding this fantasy when he cannot really believe it.
