Hello and welcome to Decoder. I'm Neil Lepetel, editor and chief of the

0:04.4

Verge, and Decoder is my show about big ideas and other problems. Today I'm

0:09.6

talking to Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify. Shopify is one of those

0:13.3

companies that makes the modern internet go. It makes software that allows

0:16.7

businesses of all sizes to set up online stores and from there it can handle

0:21.2

everything from shipping orders to financing loans for expansion. The company

0:25.8

went public in 2015 and it's been on a tear during the pandemic is online

0:30.0

commerce has exploded. This last quarter it posted revenue of 988 million.

0:34.6

0:59.5

the cut it takes on digital purchases in iOS apps. And of course there's

1:04.2

Amazon, which dominates online retail. Harley's point to me is that Shopify

1:08.6

provides tools for businesses to compete with all of these giants, and that

1:12.6

Shopify itself can sometimes act like a giant because it has so many

1:16.3

customers to represent. The phrase he used was being the empire versus

1:20.5

arming the rebels, which yeah, that's pretty good. Except for the part where the

1:24.3

empire routinely strikes back, but you'll hear him talk about that. Harley is a

1:28.0

true believer in entrepreneurs and that really came through in this conversation.
