Hey all, Joe here and you are listening to Under the Influence.

It's been a minute since I watched Survivor. It really has. I mean, I barely watch anything on TV anymore.

We're just so exhausted by bedtime that Nick and I pretty much just collapse.

So we look at each other and we're like, we should maybe

make out. But I'm so tired. I'm just so tired because putting three kids to bed is like

performing an opera every single night. We did recently start watching The Pit and we made it through the first season. I'm

real proud of us for committing to doing that thing. But I will tell you that my survivor watching

has fallen by the wayside. In one of the last seasons I watched, Stephen Fishbach was the runner-up.

And now he's a debut novelist.

The movie's new novel Escape is a really propulsive inside the machine story about a former reality contestant, desperate to reclaim his hero narrative, and a producer who's equally

desperate to control the storyline. In my mind, Survivor is one of the most powerful storytelling machines on the planet.

And reality TV is just the precursor to what we're watching right now with influencers on social

media, except now it's the influencers who shape their own stories. So looking back, talking about

Survivor, talking about strategy and production

and storytelling and narrative,

all this matters so much right now.

And also, Survivor is still on.
