Summary

If you’ve been absorbed by the latest season of The White Lotus over the past few weeks, you’ve probably found yourself Googling images of Thailand and wondering whether to book a flight there ASAP. Or perhaps you were once seduced by the fantasy of Eat, Pray, Love and considered  dropping all your responsibilities in favor of seeking a path of self discovery in Bali? When it comes to our favorite television shows and movies, the location is often a central character—so much so, that we end up framing our travel plans around it. But what real-life impact can that have on a destination? This week, Lale chats with journalist Shannon Sims to break down the trend of ‘set jetting’ and find out what happens to our favorite places when everyone decides to visit at the same time.

0:32.6

and thought of them as your secret hideaway,

0:34.6

you're now probably a little distressed about how many people are headed there.

0:41.4

A fellow journalist who's been exploring this is Shannon Sims.

0:46.1

We're going to look at what's happened to two of her favorite places, Iskir in the Bay of Naples and Rio de Janeiro a little later on.

0:53.7

First though, we can't really start this episode without talking about the White Lotus effect.

1:04.6

You know, Shannon, one thing that we were chatting about just before we started recording was,

1:08.5

I'm going to phrase as kind of almost like the battle to win White Lotus among tourism boards.

1:15.3

And the Thai tourism board really put forward a case to producers and location scouts,

1:20.9

from what I understand, to be the destination.

1:24.6

And they saw an opportunity there in terms of, I mean, really, to have your

1:28.6

destination that you're trying to sell to tourists splashed across television screens worldwide

1:33.9

in this very aspirational context. I mean, like, what a win.

1:37.7

So it is like a marketing tool for the tourism boards to be able to showcase their place.

1:43.4

What I think is interesting is to see this boost

1:46.3

in tourism to the locations. And so what's going on is people are sitting on their couch watching
