What's good, y'all? You're listening to Code Switch. I'm Gene Demby. And as we enter

cozy season, I'm remembering this conversation I had just a couple years ago.

I have always been a summer girl. Born and raised in California, I love the heat. I love swimming pools and

popsicles and long nights. And I think for the first time in my life, I am becoming a fall person.

That voice that we're all hearing right now belongs to. Ada Limone and I am becoming a fall person. That voice that we're all hearing right now belongs to...

Ada Limone, and I am a poet.

Ada is being modest, because she was actually America's poet for the last three years.

She was the poet laureate of the United States, the first Latina ever so named.

But we're going to get to all that in a second.

Anyway, Ada told me that she's in a new, different season in her life right now.

I'm always someone who likes a lot of light, and that's what I love about the summer.

Give me all the hours, Give me all the hours.

And, you know, I had a lot of loss this summer. My father-in-law passed away, who I write about quite a bit.

And so I've never thought of it this way, but the darkness that fall brings feels maybe like a healing dark, like a chance to go inward and reflect and to grieve and to cherish.

And I think that the fall is offering me a chance to do some renewal.
