Summary

The health of the pelvic floor is key to our overall health in important ways. My podcast guest today is pelvic health expert Jandra Mueller, and she explains how gastrointestinal issues such as IBS and SIBO, hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, erectile dysfunction and trauma can all impact the health and tone of the pelvic floor, and how stigmas around normal bodily functions can present obstacles to patients seeking the help they need.

Jandra dispels some myths and fears around pelvic floor issues, and discusses a variety of non-surgical interventions for pelvic floor concerns that can improve wellbeing and quality of life for patients.

0:45.0

Dr. Ruchel. Today I had on the podcast a pelvic floor specialist, Jandra Mueller, and I have to say

0:52.9

this was one of the more insightful episodes that I've had.

0:57.5

If you're experiencing distension, bloating, abdominal pain, constipation,

1:05.9

vaginal dryness, pain upon intercourse, or as a male erectile dysfunction, it's possible that a pelvic floor disorder is present.

1:15.6

However, some of these pelvic floor disorders can be somewhat misrepresented online and kind of, I guess, offered up with a simple solution of kegel exercises as one example that she helped me to

1:31.4

understand can actually be the opposite of what some people need.

1:34.9

So not only does she have a very strong knowledge base in pelvic floor, but also a good

1:43.9

overlapping into SIBO and much of what we

1:46.8

discuss on the podcast. And I'm looking at issues in the pelvic floor as one of an array of

1:54.6

things that are positioned kind of at the end of the gut algorithm. Or once you've worked someone through, if there's a degree of symptoms still present,

2:06.2

this is one area to consider.

2:08.4

And she really helped me firm up how I'm thinking through early indicators and how to see

2:16.5

if those early indicators are therefore more ruled in via the process of

2:22.7

working through the algorithm and still seeing some symptoms that have been recalcitrant

2:27.9

or non-responsive. So very appreciative of her conversation.

2:39.7

And again, for our audience, I just want to flag this as something that I don't feel gets quite enough discussion.

2:42.0

And I think this conversation really brought a lot of it home.
