So we've seen the Old Testament sacrifices and how they all prefigure the Mass, but instead of offering lambs, in the New Testament we offer bread and wine.

Instead of a priest and a victim being separate beings, today they are one.

Why? Why did God wish to have a sacrifice done in this way? Why did Christ

institute the Mass at the Last Supper before his sacrifice? So today we'll look at the

Last Supper and the passion from a theological, historical, and human perspective, and we'll

see that Jesus knew full well what any first century Jew would have known. When it came to the

and today we are going to be tackling a theological topic,

which will then turn into kind of the rest of our historical study on the institution of the new

mass. We've been looking at the Old Testament. We saw the last two episodes with Father

McGilvery about the prefigurations of the Mass. And instead of jumping right into, all right,

then our Lord went into the room on Holy Thursday and he instituted the Mass, there was a specific theological topic or idea that you felt was important for us to understand before we get there.

Yes, that our Lord is the priest and the victim of the new and the eternal covenant.

Okay.

And so our Lord is a priest who offers a sacrifice infinitely pleasing to God.

He's also the victim of that sacrifice.

He offers himself.
