The documentary film joined the club is about the origin of the movement to legalize medical marijuana.

And the filmmakers argued that if you follow this movement back in a line from where we are now with medical marijuana legal in much of the country. If you keep going back, you will land in San Francisco during the height of the AIDS crisis. At the time,

AIDS patients were wasting away. They were nauseated and unable to eat, so they were struggling

to survive. And the film actually centers on one character in particular, a man who actually coined

the term medical marijuana, a man named Dennis Perron.

He's a wildly eccentric character who, as the film unfolds, moves from being basically

a dealer to a political force.

Dennis smoked his first joint as a soldier in Vietnam, and he says it changed him.

In San Francisco, he ran a kind of countercultural commune, and he sold a lot of weed.

But when the AIDS crisis hit, everything shifted, and so did he.

The only thing that was really helping anyone was cannabis.

And Dennis Prone was at the forefront of this.

And his partner, his best friend, his lover, his soulmate, Jonathan, had full-blown AIDS at this time.

Jonathan was beautiful. He was a beautiful man. He was so into his health and taking care of himself and what he ate and everything.

He went from being this young man with all this energy to shrinking and getting

skinnier and the lesions was our forming on him. Dennis cleaned up Jonathan, his wounds. He changed his

bedding. He took care of him.

He was passing away pretty rapidly.
