Okay, today we are moving back into Matthew chapter six. We're looking at verses five and six.

And this particular episode of titled How Not to Pray. Jesus gives some very specific

instructions for a very important reason. Let's read it together. It's Matthew six, five through six.

He says, and when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. Where they love to stand and

pray in the synagogues and at the street corners that they may be seen by others. Truly,

I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door

and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you.

Okay, let's remind ourselves real quickly of what Jesus is doing, this overall section we

call the sermon on the Mount. He's describing to the people of his day what's going to be different

about the kind of kingdom he's going to be leading. As opposed to the kind of kingdom they were

imagining the Messiah had come to implement. You see, they were thinking of a military leader,

a typical earthly king. Someone to sit on a throne and someone to lead the nation to be dominant

and powerful and all those things. Jesus is saying, no, my kingdom is not of this world. My kingdom

is different. He calls it the kingdom of heaven. And so in this sermon, he's describing how citizens
