There's a new book coming out at the end of the month that takes on one of the most private, maybe most

misunderstood parts of Mormon life. It's the temple garments worn by members of the Church

of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And the book was written by three women, researchers and

independent scholars of the faith. And it's built around a survey they conducted where they asked

Latter-day Saints questions like, what do your garments mean to you and how do you feel when

you're wearing them? And the response to the survey blew them away, more than 4,500 in just a week.

And one of the things they noticed in all of those stories was that the pressure to wear

their garments as a sign of, you know, faith and obedience to follow the rules didn't come

from leaders as much as it came from other members.

The judging, the surveillance, the social expectations,

all of that was coming from inside the community, not just from the top. One of the co-authors of the book,

Nancy Ross, told us the perfect illustration of this is when Anne Romney, Mitt Romney's wife,

went on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2012.

She asked the American public to kind of set aside their prejudice or whatever they thought they knew about Mormons to elect the first Mormon president.

I love the fact that we have the first African-American president.

That means to me that we're leaving prejudices behind.

I would hope that if we're elected, we would see more of this thing.

And the next day, Mormon spaces were all up in arms about her underwear.

And of course, her underwear was not on display, but there were lots of conversations

pointing out that with the length of her skirt and her sleeves that nobody could detect
