A few millennia ago, this whole Kathmandu valley was a big lake.

It was called Naguas.

That means the abode of the Nagas. Nagas are a type of people who are associated with serpents.

Maharishi Manjushri, one of the sages who merge with Kalash,

heard about this, that in the middle of the lake a kind of a

legendary five-colored lotus flower they say it was made of fire you created a

gorge through which the water flowed out and drained the lake and enshrined that lotus flower in a place

where today it is called a Swyambu, they're calling it a stupa. But it was well before Gautam Buddha

came, thousands of years before that. And then this enshrinement happened because Maharishi's shapa came from Kashi and enshrined this in a small abode.

Over that, the stupa was built sometime, I don't know when, but now there is a stupa.
