0:10.0	I'm Keith Simon. I'm Tanya Wilmoth. And I'm Patrick Miller. We're in the middle of our Christmas
0:15.4	series right now. We're exploring the stories around Jesus's birth and the prophecies
0:20.1	pointing forward to it.
0:23.1	You're probably familiar with the name John McCain.
0:25.8	He was a longtime senator from Arizona, and then he ran for president against Barack Obama
0:30.4	in 2008.
0:31.5	Of course, McCain lost that election. But long before he ever ran for public
0:36.0	office, John McCain was a member of the United States military. He fought in the Vietnam War.
0:41.0	In fact, on October 26,, 1967 he was taken captive by the North
0:45.5	Vietnamese and served as a prisoner of war for over five and a half years.
0:50.3	Now every prisoner of war has a very tough experience but McCain's was
0:55.4	particularly brutal. You see the North Vietnamese they figured out that he was the
1:00.2	son of a United States Admiral and so they offered him early release.
1:04.7	But John McCain refused that release.
1:06.5	He turned it down because he knew the North Vietnamese would try to use it as propaganda
1:10.8	against the country that he loved and was serving. He also turned it down
1:14.5	because he wanted to stay with the other men who were prisoners of war. He didn't want to
1:18.8	use his privilege as a get-out-of-jail free card. Well that angered the North Vietnamese and so they were
1:25.9	particularly brutal toward John McCain. He endured extra beatings three times a week and
1:32.1	by everyone's account they were incredibly painful.
