0:12.1	Okay, don't get mad at me, but my house has been decorated for Christmas for a very long time, like long
0:22.1	before Thanksgiving. And I'm not usually one of the early type, but this year,
0:27.3	due to my husband's busy schedule, we could do it on the 14th of November or the 12th of December. So early it was. And while we were
0:36.0	setting up our decorations, we like many people unboxed our nativity scene.
0:41.5	It's one we got from my husband's family and it has the cute stables and the manger and a little baby Jesus and all the usual characters.
0:49.0	It's really cute. It's the quintessential little scene we have in mind when we think of Jesus' birth.
0:57.4	And in the first gospel in the Bible, Matthew, you'd assume the section of scripture titled The Birth of Jesus Christ
1:04.0	would take us to that same quintessential scene, but it doesn't, ever.
1:09.0	We'll have to wait for later Gospels to explore that scene because the Gospel of Matthew's account of the birth of Jesus Christ has a much different focus.
1:19.5	And this is actually what I love about the Gospels. Each is written by a different author and each author has their own theme they weave throughout the narrative.
1:28.6	And so while they all tell of the life and work of Jesus Christ, they also give us a different new
1:35.2	perspective through which we get to see Jesus. So the book of Matthew is
1:40.3	written primarily to a Jewish audience and he chooses to highlight Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises throughout his book.
1:49.0	And so, Matthew's choice not to focus on the manger and the donkeys and the star isn't because
1:55.3	it didn't happen or he didn't think it mattered, but because Matthew is choosing to focus
2:00.3	in on the part of the story that highlights one of his main themes.
2:05.1	So let's dive into the scripture and see exactly how Matthew does this through his account
2:09.8	of the birth of Jesus.
2:12.1	Chapter 1, verse 18. Now the birth of Jesus. Chapter 1, verse 18.
2:14.4	Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.
