Hey, thanks for waiting the extra day and joining us on this special post-election edition of OffMessage.

Tuesday's results demonstrated the degree to which the country is fracturing, politically,

culturally, and otherwise, with exurban and rural areas getting more and more conservative,

and suburban areas getting more and more liberal.

This manifested itself in the sharply diverging results in the

House and Senate elections. In the lower chamber, Democrats stormed back into the majority,

capturing what should be when all of the votes in California are finally counted, a net gain of

34 to 36 seats.

The Senate map was an entirely different story.

Republicans picked up at least three seats and have expanded their majority

heading into the final two years of Donald Trump's presidency.
