| 0:03.4 | In 2010, a guy set himself on fire in Tunisia and eventually died. |
| 0:10.4 | People went out into the streets and demanded that the dictator of Tunisia had to go. |
| 0:16.4 | And soon millions of people across the Middle East were doing the same thing, including |
| 0:22.6 | In Syria. |
| 0:24.7 | You might not remember this, but the war in Syria actually started as a protest. |
| 0:31.1 | Pretty soon though, government forces started shooting protesters and people started fighting |
| 0:35.0 | back. |
| 0:36.8 | That's when it became a civil war, government versus anti-government. |
| 0:41.6 | But then it became something else. |
| 0:45.1 | I covered Syria back then, and to go there, we would have to sneak over the border from |
| 0:51.0 | Turkey. |
| 0:53.1 | And at one point, we started to see these other guys crossing the border too. |
| 0:58.1 | Guys with long beards and short pants carrying gun-sized boxes. |
| 1:03.7 | Guys who would say they were doctors, but looked like something else. |
| 1:08.5 | Guys from the Gulf, the former Soviet Union, Europe, Northern Africa. |
| 1:13.7 | And the Turks wanted to let these guys into Syria, so they could help fight against |
| 1:18.4 | the Syrian government. |
| 1:21.3 | They didn't know what none of us knew. |
| 1:24.3 | Was that eventually some of these guys who came over the border would have other goals. |
| 1:30.4 | Like fighting not just the Syrian government, but anyone who stood in the way of their |
| 1:35.7 | ultimate goal. |
