why. I am barely exaggerating when I say that modern civilization exists because of spices.

Spices, we can barely understand how important they were to late medieval and early modern

society. In the 1400s, the right spice, nutmeg, cloves, was Ferrari. It was high-end medicine.

It was a way to flash your wealth. It was cutting edge medical research. It was all these

things wrapped into one. Spices were used for flavoring food, making perfume,

embombing the dead, preserving meat, and sprucing up salve recipes in traditional medicine.

These include things like peppercorn, clove, cinnamon, and other things like that.
