Summary

In the third installment of our "How I Became" series, we're focusing less about traveling around the world—and more about traveling up the corporate ladder. In conversation with Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Celebrity Cruises' president and CEO and the first woman to hold that title in industry history, we look back at how she started her career and rose to the top with no female mentors or advocates in sight. Along the way, we chat about handling rejection—both 35 years ago, when first trying to get into the cruise industry, and five years ago, when she was told "no" three times before finally getting her spot in the C-suite.

we recently used for international women's days. Yeah, we'll talk about that. Fantastic. Well, to kick

0:49.9

things off, I would love you to tell us a little bit about how you first got into the cruise

industry and what that first job was, because you've been in the industry for most of your

life. Most of my life. I've been in this company for 35 years, and I was in the travel business

1:08.0

for one year before I came to the cruise industry. And that's how my

1:12.5

career in travel started. And it was born of my introspection about what was the rest of my

1:21.4

life going to be and what career did I want. I was floundering. I was in the hotel business,

1:27.2

where I'm from, which is Massachusetts. And it just

1:30.8

wasn't fulfilling me. The properties got pretty small pretty quickly. There were some other things

1:35.8

going on. And I just said, you know what, it's time for a big change. What am I going to do?

1:40.6

I was reading the, I'm going to date myself now, although saying 35 and 36 years is pretty much doing that for me, but I was actually reading the help wanted sections of the Boston Globe and this job, I found this job that seemed interesting and it was a cruise travel specialist for a company called Crimson Travel. That's how it started.
