Summary

Matt is joined by Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw to discuss the fallout from the devastating fires in L.A. that are still ongoing. So much of Los Angeles is made up of the entertainment industry—from movie stars, directors, and agents to camera operators, teamsters, caterers, and production assistants—thousands of whom have been seriously affected by the fires. Matt and Lucas take a look at how Hollywood can help rebuild the city of L.A., and how it can leverage events like the Oscars and Grammys to actually benefit those in need. They also look at the long-term impact of the fires on Los Angeles as the entertainment capital of the world, and wonder if this will exacerbate the continued struggle to keep movie and TV production in L.A., or if this could be the beginning of a triumphant rebuild. Hi, everyone. Normally on Monday's I shout out Puck, but today I wanted to do something different.

Before we start the show, I want to shout out the firefighters, first responders, police department,

everyone else who risked their lives to protect L.A. as these fires have continued to devastate the city.

As I mentioned, I am safe, so I appreciate all the outreach. But if you would

like to help those who are not saved, those who are affected, we're going to put a link in the

episode description for this episode to some of the charitable places that are helping the

displaced, helping the people who lost everything,

0:39.4

helping them with their pets, all the different organizations, plus the L.A. Fire Department

Foundation. So if you're interested, please go there and help someone who's been impacted by

0:50.3

the fire. All right. Thanks, everyone. Let's get on to the show. It is Monday,

January 13th. Obviously, this past week has been incredibly difficult for the city of Los Angeles,

1:02.6

the greater Southern California area, even with the amazing job the media has been doing and

1:07.8

relaying the devastation. It still feels like it's worse on the ground here than what people have been conveying. It's also been a really difficult week for

1:15.1

Hollywood. By Hollywood, I mean the people who actually make the entertainment industry work,

1:19.8

plus the actual production of film, television, music, all of which has been shut down mostly,

1:25.2

although it's planning to start up a little bit this week.

1:31.9

I still can't believe how many people I know personally who have lost everything. It's crazy.

1:36.9

We see the headlines about stars losing their homes, but of course it goes way beyond the rich and famous. Producers, executives, agents, lawyers, all kinds of people within the entertainment community.

1:42.6

As Disney said in its announcement that it's giving

1:44.9

$15 million to the relief effort, the history of the Walt Disney company is inextricably linked

1:50.9

to the greater Los Angeles region. The same could be said for the entire entertainment business,

what people in town call the town. IOTC, the below-the-line union for entertainment workers, they said at least
