The presidential election is likely to be decided by events that have yet to occur, much more so than the events that have already occurred.

And what's occurring in Haiti is anarchy.

People will flee by the hundreds and then by the thousands and by the 10,000s, and maybe by the 100,000s, and maybe a million.

The only country that has the capacity to do any of this is the United States of America.

Have you ever had the experience of driving on a long road, watching it wind and undulate, seeing the hills come up ahead.

Have you ever pondered who built the road?

Where did it lead to and where did it come from?

Why did someone build that road?

And who had the wisdom to maintain it?

We're very lucky to live in a country that has been passed on to us by builders,

by people who architected ideas into reality and advanced them

through great turmoil and terrible costs,

through the trials of injustice and war,

and hunger and depression,

to make the union more perfect.

And here we are, imperfectly,

but known around the world as a beacon of opportunity

and hope and justice. One of the great divisive issues of our time, a time of ingratitude, is that as we angrily, as a

nation, look at our borders and denounce the human beings who have struggled to reach them,

we do so at the same time for many of us being enthralled to a man who denounces the nation as worthless that those people would risk everything

to reach. There seems to be an imbalance, a lack of symmetry between the rhetoric and the reality.

We are lucky to live in the United States.
