| 0:00.0 | So Bill Goldberg, as Brett Hart would say, he loved to double name him, and also I have started |
| 0:04.1 | this video deliberately that way. I would like to pretend I'm not going to mention those two people again. It is low-hanging fruit. I'm probably going to do it. Goldberg is such an interesting character when it does come to his legacy in professional wrestling though, because no matter what you thought of the man, if you go back to the late 90s, he was integral for WCW being the the WCWE remembered. I would go as far to say that in 1998 and 1999, if you don't have Bill, well, a bit of hyperbole here, WCW may have died long before it did. He wasn't able to connect with fans though and people thought he was a badass, but of course he does have his critics too. Actually, the funny thing about this video, is it is our series where we rate professional wrestlers based on whose guide, Brett Hart that he wrote in his autobiography, where he said you take look, you take presentation, you take promos, you take in-ring skills, you mark them out of 10, you get a total out of 30, and then you can figure out if professional wrestler is any good or not. Now as always, I'm going to throw my caveat in there because I do totally agree with this. If you have signed a deal with AEW or WWE or any top tier promotion, you have totally smashed it. And if you get to 2026 and your name is still on somebody's tongue, then you must have done a good job. There are many ways to crack this pro-wrestling egg. So matter what we get into today, Bill Goldberg is exactly one of those people. Now we do start with presents and look as well. Goldberg has to be one of the most perfect professional wrestlers ever, even more so because WCW got this right. I mean, arguably they brought him to TV too soon, but he looked like such a badass and he blew smoke out of his nose. Even if you had never seen |
| 1:27.7 | pro wrestling before, you can look at Goldberg and go, well, I tell you, this guy is pretty cool. I mean, he really was the definition of push somebody's strengths and hide their weaknesses, and this is going to drive you crazy, but it is true, you can go out there and read it. At one point in time, he was one of the most popular wrestlers on the planet, as you will see as we get into this. He appeared on the |
| 1:44.7 | cover of national magazines in the United States of America. That doesn't really happen today. |
| 1:49.5 | We all know that Goldberg had his limitations too, but that winning streak was absolutely |
| 1:53.2 | badass and everybody loved it. And also, people bought into it too. And you couldn't have done |
| 1:58.6 | this with anyone. The reason somebody backstage went, I think I've got a good plan with Bill, is because he looked like this. I mean, it's absolutely ridiculous. If you saw that running at you to give you a spear, you would probably pondered to yourself, am I even going to survive this? The entrance at his peak as well is super cool to watch, especially with all the smoke that we've discussed, but even the ringwalk he used to do from the locker room area. I mean, it kind of doesn't make sense because he used to come back with security. And of all the people on the WCW roster, well, one would hazard I guess the one person that didn't be protecting was Bill Goldberg. Even the theme music is a work of art because apparently, and I think this true, and I double checked it, it was just part of the WCW production library. Someone just sat there and went through a bunch of files. |
| 2:38.3 | They found the whole, duh, da, da-da-da-da-la, and somehow knew that was for Bill. It was even |
| 2:44.2 | more interesting because in 1998 or 1997, I suppose, you think somebody would have given him |
| 2:49.0 | some weird riff, they didn't. He always-da-da-da-da-a. |
| 2:51.9 | Riff, they didn't. |
| 3:06.9 | He also had the best look as well, and yes, people say he copied Steve Austin, and maybe that was true, but really it was the fact that Bill Goldberg wanted to ensure that his presentation was everything he did do and not how he looked like. So the black trunks and the black knee plaids and the back elbow pads. I mean, it just worked. |
| 3:09.0 | And also, he was so damn over. |
| 3:11.2 | Some people even went out there and got his tattoo. |
| 3:08.8 | Bill God. the black knee plaids, the back elbow pads. I mean, it just worked. And also, he was so damn over. Some people even went out there and got his tattoo. Bill Goldberg's promo shots as well |
| 3:12.8 | just told you everything you did need to know. And don't pretend to me that WW wouldn't have |
| 3:17.1 | signed you if they could have done. I just think this one you've got to be completely honest with, |
| 3:20.6 | and it is a 9.7 out of 10. If you want to whack a 10 on it, you probably can. I'm just leaving margin 4 error because apparently that's what we are meant to do. But in terms of the looks and tying up to a character in the history of pro wrestling, Goldberg is probably top 10. But what of his promos? Now this is a very interesting subject to get in because Goldberg always should have been a man that had a few words. The problem was we went to WWE in 2003 and was expected to be a main event guy. Well, you know the deal if you watch World Wrestling Entertainment Today. You're meant to be able to take a microphone and talk for around about 22 minutes. The thing is, though, the best part of Bill's game was, to repeat myself, how short and sweet it was, which included the matches. |
| 4:16.9 | But sometimes after he had murked someone, he would grab a microphone and just go, well, who's next or you're next or I'm going to get you. He would just throw in three or four words. The crowd went crazy, and because they didn't see him too much, it was a less is more scenario. Everybody then tuned in to see him again next week. The fact he did do this as well meant he was even more interesting too. He had a mysterious nature about him. |
| 4:15.1 | He was kind of like an... everybody then tuned in to see him again next week. The fact he did do this as well meant he was even more interesting too. |
| 4:16.9 | He had a mysterious nature about him. |
| 4:31.7 | He was kind of like an action star from the 80s and Arnold Schwarzenegger or Stavisselaone because again, go watch the first Terminator movie. Arnie has like four lines. I've exaggerated there, but it's not a lot. Now, a huge issue is that in the year 2000, WCW turned him heel, and you can't ignore that. |
