There was an article a few years ago that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicles

regarding a young man who, while he was walking along the street, he found a $5 bill.

And then when he picked it up, he made a vow right then and now.

That he will never keep his eyes off the street anymore,

that he will walk looking down, not up.

Now you don't have to be very bright to realize that this is very dangerous.

But the paper went on to say, and I quote, he said,

over the years, he accumulated, among other things,

29,516 buttons,

54,17 pins,

12 cents,

a bent back,

and a miserly disposition.

But he also missed on something.

He lost seeing the glory of the sunlight,

the radiance of the stars,

and the smiles of friends,

and the freshness of a blue sky.

Even a secular newspaper can discern the misery of greed.

The Bible tells us that there are even graver consequences to greed and covetousness.

The Bible tells us that unbridled greed produces an unadulterated misery, that uncontrollable covetousness results from an unabating grief in life, that the fever of wanting more and more and more

can only produce a perpetual pain and incompleteness and emptiness.
