Summary

Will the mainstream media ever recover? With honourable exceptions, there has been an abject failure to cover Israel's onslaught against Gaza. Double standards, minimising horror, refusing to attribute responsibility for crimes, a failure to frame reality as it is, deferring to Israeli and US claims - we could go on.

I'm joined by Middle East scholar and author Assal Rad, who has been going viral with her exposés of media bias.

the blood, the death, the mayhem, the mass destruction,

0:47.4

mass displacement, and the huge numbers

of quite obvious war crimes which are often posted by Israeli soldiers for the amusement of Israeli

domestic opinion on Tik-Tock and the way the media has framed what has happened.

1:00.9

And someone for me throughout this has been like coming up for air just in terms of shining a light on the double standards of the media, the failure to frame what's actually happening and to hold perpetrators to account.

No one's done a better job than Asal Rad who is a Middle East expert and also an author, for example of state of resistance, politics,

1:26.4

cultural and identity in modern Iran. And the reason Assals' tweets keep going viral is the excellent, but she's put in a huge amount of work.

1:37.4

She must take quite a lot of emotional labour of looking at often headlines and how they're often completely misleading,

1:47.1

how they don't assign responsibility for horrors which are happening and how they contrast, for example, with coverage of other atrocities,

1:55.8

for example, Russia's invasion of Ukraine. So with that extremely long and rambling introduction,

hello Assel, it's great to see you.
