Summary

Dr. Tim Stratton presents his case that free will is evidence for God. Tim has spent a good deal of time refining this argument in his PhD studies and we're going to get an accessible breakdown of how it works. Now, Tim doesn't normally have an eye patch but since he didn't send me over a better photo I'm punishing him... and really, I just thought it was funny. I hope this breakdown of the "free will argument against naturalism" will be not only personally enlightening and convincing to you but will become another tool in your own intellectual toolbox of ways to help others see the truth of Jesus Christ. Here's Tim's web site and specifically an article on the problem of evil and how he answers it. Tim has TONS of free articles you may be interested on his site in addition to this one. https://freethinkingministries.com/3-circles-all-the-problems-of-evil/ Another article from Tim on "unjustified suffering" https://freethinkingministries.com/a-thought-experiment-vs-unjustified-evil-suffering/ Tim's YouTube channel, which he intends to utilize more in the future, has a video he asked me to share with you on how he handles divine determinism which many Calvinists affirm. https://youtu.be/qFKg0veH7fo

I'm here with my guest Dr. Tim Stratton and I just want to ask you Tim explain for our audience

0:06.2

say like the 17 year old who has no philosophical education what are you saying like what's your

0:10.5

argument for God how does this thing work Help us to just before we go deep to

0:15.2

understand just on the surface, what is your point?

0:18.6

Well, let's just start out by talking about naturalism. Naturalism is the view that only nature exists.

0:26.7

So if that's the case, there's no God, there's no angels or demons, there's no abstract objects,

0:32.4

and there's definitely not a human soul

0:35.3

immaterial aspect of human existence. If naturalism is true only the stuff

0:41.4

that scientists could test or possibly discover is what actually exists.

0:47.9

But if nature is all that exists, then that means that everything about humanity, everything about you would be caused and determined by the forces and past events of nature, like physics and chemistry for example. But if physics and chemistry are running

1:06.5

the entire show, then that means that physics and chemistry cause and determine everything about you. and causes and determines exactly what you think of and about and exactly how you think of and about it.

1:28.0

But if that's the case, then if the forces of nature cause and determine you to hold a false belief,

1:36.0

then it would be impossible for you to reach a better belief, let alone the truth.

1:42.0

But here's the deal. You can reach true beliefs. You can do it. I mean, does anybody really want to say that they can't reach true beliefs.

1:53.4

I mean that would mean that you reached the true belief

1:56.7

that you cannot reach true beliefs.

1:59.2

That's just crazy talk.

2:00.8

So if that's the case, here's what we can conclude.

2:04.0

Since you can reach better and true beliefs, right?

2:08.0

You're not forced to hold false beliefs.

2:11.0

Then it follows that not all of your beliefs are caused and

2:15.3

determined by the forces and past events of nature, or really anything else for that
